Answer & solution

Answer: Option D

Rank the seven from highest (1st) to lowest (7th).

Only three people scored more than F, so F is 4th.

Only G scored less than B, so B is 6th and G is 7th.

More than three people scored between G and D. G is 7th, so if D is kth there are 6 − k people between them, and 6 − k > 3 means k is 1 or 2.

C scored less than E with no one between, so E and C occupy consecutive ranks with E above C.

The ranks still free are 1, 2, 3 and 5. The only consecutive pair among them that leaves rank 1 or 2 open for D is E = 2nd and C = 3rd, which forces D = 1st and A = 5th.

The order is D, E, C, F, A, B, G.

B is 6th, which is the second lowest score, so B = 71, and E = 90, F = 84.

A sits between F and B, so A must be more than 71 and less than 84.

Of the options only 79 lies in that range.
