IIM B UG (B.Sc-Hons.)- Sample Paper 2026 question on Arrangements, with the answer and a step-by-step solution.
Seven students — A, B, C, D, E, F and G — sit in a row of seven seats, numbered 1 to 7 from left to right, all facing north.
— A sits immediately to the right of C.
— D sits somewhere to the left of E, and exactly two students sit between them.
— F sits somewhere to the left of G.
— As many students sit to the left of A as sit to the right of G.
Who sits in the middle?
- AB
- BD
- CF
- DG
Answer & solution
Answer: Option B
The middle seat is seat 4.
As many students sit left of A as right of G, so A − 1 = 7 − G, which gives A + G = 8.
D is left of E with exactly two students between them, so E is three seats after D.
Working through the possible pairs for A and G, four seatings satisfy every clue:
C A B D F G E,
C A F D B G E,
F C A D G B E,
F G B D C A E.
The order of the row is therefore not fixed by the clues.
But D occupies seat 4 in every one of them, because E must be three seats to D's right and only D = 4 with E = 7 leaves room for the remaining conditions.
So the student in the middle is D.
