Answer & solution

Answer: Option C

Let the first-year loss be 100p percent, so the balance is multiplied by \left( 1-p \right). The second year grows by 500p percent, multiplying by \left( 1+5p \right).

A total gain of 35\% means \left( 1-p \right)\left( 1+5p \right)=1.35.

Expanding: 1+4p-5{p}^{2}=1.35, so 5{p}^{2}-4p+0.35=0, or 100{p}^{2}-80p+7=0.

Then p=\frac{80\pm \sqrt{6400-2800}}{200}=\frac{80\pm 60}{200}, giving p=0.7 or p=0.1.

Here is where the balance condition earns its place: p=0.7 would leave only ₹3000, which is less than ₹5000. So p=0.1 and the first-year loss is 10\%.
