IPMAT Indore 2026 · Quantitative Ability · Question 2
IPMAT Indore 2026 previous year question on Profit and Loss, with the answer and a step-by-step solution.
Ram purchased 3 oranges at Rs. 20 each and 5 mangoes at Rs. 38 each and then sold them by offering discounts of 25% and 20% on the fixed marked prices of oranges and mangoes, respectively. If he earned a profit of 50% on selling the oranges alone, and a total profit of 32% on selling all the fruits, then the marked price of each mango was _________
Answer & solution
Answer: 60
Step 1 — cost prices.
\text{Oranges}=3\times 20=60, \text{Mangoes}=5\times 38=190, \text{Total}=250
Step 2 — use the 50% profit on oranges.
\text{SP of oranges}=60\times 1.5=90
A 25% discount means he receives 75% of the marked price:
0.75\times M{P}_{\text{oranges}}=90 \Rightarrow M{P}_{\text{oranges}}=120
Step 3 — use the 32% overall profit.
\text{Total SP}=250\times 1.32=330 \Rightarrow \text{SP of mangoes}=330-90=240
Step 4 — undo the 20% discount. He receives 80% of the marked price:
0.80\times M{P}_{\text{mangoes}}=240 \Rightarrow M{P}_{\text{mangoes}}=300
Step 5 — per mango. There are 5 mangoes:
\frac{300}{5}=60
Answer: 60
Shortcut. Work in totals and only divide by 5 at the very end — carrying “per mango” through the whole calculation is where people slip. Also note the orange marked price (120) is never actually needed; only its selling price of 90 matters.
