IPMAT Indore 2025 · Quantitative Ability · Question 19

IPMAT Indore 2025 previous year question on Averages, Mixture and Alligation, with the answer and a step-by-step solution.

Averages, Mixture and AlligationArithmeticMultiple choiceMedium
Suppose a, b and c are three real numbers such that \text{Max}\left( a,b,c \right)+\text{Min}\left( a,b,c \right)=15, and \text{Median}\left( a,b,c \right)-\text{Mean}\left( a,b,c \right)=2. Then the median of a, b and c is
  1. A
    11
  2. B
    10.5
  3. C
    10
  4. D
    9.5
Pick an option, then check.
Answer & solution

Answer: Option B

Step 1 — write the mean in terms of max, min and median. For three numbers, the three values are the max, the median and the min. So

\text{Mean}=\frac{\text{Max}+\text{Median}+\text{Min}}{3}

Step 2 — substitute the first condition. We are told \text{Max}+\text{Min}=15. Writing M for the median:

\text{Mean}=\frac{15+M}{3}

Step 3 — use the second condition.

M-\frac{15+M}{3}=2

Multiply through by 3:

3M-\left( 15+M \right)=6 \Rightarrow 2M=21 \Rightarrow M=10.5

Answer: Option 2 — 10.5
