Answer & solution

Answer: Option B

The phrasal verb. To put up with someone means to tolerate them, to endure something annoying without complaint.

Why it fits. The sentence is built on a contrast: she keeps interrupting, but he does something — and the reason given (“because she is his younger sister”) explains forbearance. Tolerance is the only sense the but… because structure allows.

Why the others fail:

(a) puts her off — to postpone, or to repel/discourage. Both senses contradict the affectionate reason given.

(c) puts along with her — not an English expression. The real phrase is get along with, meaning to have a good relationship.

(d) puts her on — to deceive or tease someone (chiefly American). Teasing is not what a reason like “she is his younger sister” would explain.

Answer: Option 2

Shortcut. Let the connectives do the reasoning. The frame is:

annoying behaviour but he ____ because she is his younger sister

“But” demands that his response contrast with being annoyed, and “because” demands a reason for indulgence. Only tolerance satisfies both.

Three-word phrasal verbs are usually fixed: put up with, get along with, look forward to, come up with. Blending two of them (as option (c) does) is the commonest way a distractor is manufactured.
