IPMAT Indore 2022 previous year question on Phrasal Verbs, with the answer and a step-by-step solution.
Complete the following sentence by choosing the most appropriate word/phrase from the options given below.
She _______________________ her classmates because she comes from a very rich, aristocratic family.
- Alooks up to
- Blooks towards
- Clooks away from
- Dlooks down on
Answer & solution
Answer: Option D
The phrasal verb. To look down on someone means to regard them as inferior.
Why it fits. The reason given is that she comes from a “very rich, aristocratic family” — a cause of social superiority. The attitude that follows is contempt for her classmates.
Why the others fail:
(a) looks up to ✘ — the exact opposite: to admire or respect. Wealth and aristocratic origin would not cause her to admire classmates.
(b) looks towards — means to face in a direction, or to anticipate (look towards the future). It expresses no attitude at all.
(c) looks away from — to avert one’s gaze; about avoidance, not judgement, and it does not follow from being wealthy.
Answer: Option 4
Shortcut. The clause after because is the whole question. It gives the cause — wealth and aristocracy — so the blank must be the attitude that cause produces. Contempt, not admiration.
Options (a) and (d) are a deliberate opposite pair, which is itself a signal: in phrasal-verb questions, when two options are antonyms, one of them is almost always right. Decide between them by the direction of the causal clause.
The spatial logic helps you remember the pair: up to = respect, down on = contempt. Both need their preposition; dropping it changes the verb entirely.
