Question 6

In which year was profit as a percentage of expenditure the highest?

  1. A

    2023

  2. B

    2025

  3. C

    2022

  4. D

    2024

Pick an option, then check.
Answer & solution

Answer: Option A

Work out the profit and then express it as a percentage of that year's expenditure.

2021: profit = 80 − 64 = 16, and 16 ÷ 64 = 25%.

2022: profit = 100 − 80 = 20, and 20 ÷ 80 = 25%.

2023: profit = 120 − 90 = 30, and 30 ÷ 90 = 33.33%.

2024: profit = 150 − 120 = 30, and 30 ÷ 120 = 25%.

2025: profit = 180 − 144 = 36, and 36 ÷ 144 = 25%.

Every year except 2023 gives exactly 25%, so 2023 is the highest.

Question 7 · Line Graph

What was the total profit over the five years?
  1. A
    Rs 138 lakh
  2. B
    Rs 120 lakh
  3. C
    Rs 132 lakh
  4. D
    Rs 126 lakh
Pick an option, then check.
Answer & solution

Answer: Option C

Take the profit for each year as income − expenditure.

2021: 80 − 64 = 16.

2022: 100 − 80 = 20.

2023: 120 − 90 = 30.

2024: 150 − 120 = 30.

2025: 180 − 144 = 36.

Total = 16 + 20 + 30 + 30 + 36 = 132 lakh rupees.

Question 8 · Line Graph

In 2026, expenditure rises by 25% over 2025. If the company targets a profit equal to 25% of its income, what income must it earn in 2026?
  1. A
    Rs 234 lakh
  2. B
    Rs 240 lakh
  3. C
    Rs 216 lakh
  4. D
    Rs 225 lakh
Pick an option, then check.
Answer & solution

Answer: Option B

Expenditure in 2025 was 144 lakh, so the 2026 expenditure = 144 × 1.25 = 180 lakh.

If profit is to be 25% of income, then expenditure is the remaining 75% of income.

So 0.75 × income = 180.

Income = 180 ÷ 0.75 = Rs 240 lakh.

Question 9 · Line Graph

For 2022 and 2023 combined, what was profit as a percentage of total expenditure? Round to two decimal places.
  1. A
    33.33%
  2. B
    25.00%
  3. C
    29.41%
  4. D
    27.78%
Pick an option, then check.
Answer & solution

Answer: Option C

Combined profit = (100 − 80) + (120 − 90) = 20 + 30 = 50 lakh.

Combined expenditure = 80 + 90 = 170 lakh.

Percentage = (50 ÷ 170) × 100 = 29.41%.
