From a container filled with milk, 9 litres of milk are drawn and replaced with water. Next, from the same container, 9 litres are drawn and again replaced with water. If the volumes of milk and water in the container are now in the ratio of 16 : 9, then the capacity of the container, in litres, is
Answer & solution

Answer: 45

After each replacement the milk left is multiplied by \left( 1-\frac{9}{C}\right), where C is the capacity.

After two replacements the fraction of milk is {\left( 1-\frac{9}{C}\right)}^{2}.

Milk : water =16:9 means milk is \frac{16}{25} of the whole,

so {\left( 1-\frac{9}{C}\right)}^{2}=\frac{16}{25} and 1-\frac{9}{C}=\frac{4}{5}.

Hence \frac{9}{C}=\frac{1}{5} and C=45 litres.
